As I launch a “missional” bible study in two weeks I reviewed these blogs for inspiration, a sense of direction and clarification. I am currently embedded in a “deeply southern” context and struggling with the established worldview which permeates and informs a very nostalgic, while tasteless gospel. Meaning, building focused, divisive and celebrity oriented. Thank you Dave for you ear and prophetic witness. Thank you…God’s peace and good journey!

It seems we confuse the gospel when we associate the gospel itself with the good works of believers in the world. Though, as a consequence of the gospel’s work in our lives, we should be doing all that you mentioned, the gospel is not about what we do but about what God has accomplished and will accomplish through the person and work of Jesus Christ. All of the human works that you mention are done as well, if not better, by non-believers. Those works are no more part of the gospel than our works. The good news ‘gospel’ can never be the imperfect and incomplete works of believers.

I agree with this statement: “We must present the gospel not merely as offering individual salvation, or a better solution to needs than other gods can provide, but as God’s plan for the whole universe in Christ.” But, my question is: What does that plan look like now and, when does it ultimately take place, and who brings about that plan? Is ‘missional’ becoming a new form of post-millennialism?

I couldn’t agree with your article more. As Church leaders increasingly show from Scripture that God is clearly on mission, and has been from the beginning of time, there will be a new understanding across the whole Church of what it means to follow Jesus into the world everyday; not just on Sunday mornings or during other church events. Yes, I believe the Holy Spirit is moving and I hope we will not shrink back. Be blessed.

Yes, I think a new “reformation” is under way. A movement away from the overemphasis on teaching, preaching, and study, and a movement toward putting what we learn into practice in our community and around the world.

I would not say that the whole world has gone missional…. but I would say that we are headed that direction.
